Fiela has had her first incident of SS (sleep standing)!
After stubbornly refusing to lie down the whole afternoon, she ended up sleeping upright … She slept for 17 minutes.
SS is common in adult elephants as their sheer bulk makes it very difficult and uncomfortable to lie down. If they did lie down to sleep for longer than an hour, they would actually end up crushing their internal organs.
Juvenile elephants can obviously spend longer hours lying down.
